There are 6 types of heating for a home. Electric, oil, wood, gas, solar and geothermal. You eliminated 2 so choose another, in your location that is reliable. Geothermal is very rare in the US, solar needs sun and some expense to install. That leaves gas and wood as practical solutions. I suggest you buy a new wood stove and have it installed including a new chimney pipe system. Maybe $2000, and not a pellet type since you need to buy them unless you have no woodlot to harvest your own wood. My opinion is that a wood fire is the warmest type of heat if you need to get up in the morning to split the wood for the day. Add some duct work to spread the heat through the house and a couple of fans will warm each area but it is warmest next to the stove.
