It is a theory with no evidence or proof far less then conventional theories at any rate. It is simply the doctrine of a book written two thousand years ago by a man who did not understand the universe and sought to make a reasoneable solution.
An old smoke detector does contain a minute amount of radioactive material but of course, millions of them add up to a serious problem in landfills. Most cities consider them hazardous waste and have some means of collecting them. Look up your city waste disposal department on line or phone city hall to ask how your community deals with the problem.
