In Stephen Crane's novel The Red Badge of Courage, why is the war itself not even named?
There are references in the book to events during the Civil War. In addition, the time of publication by this American author left no doubt in any American's mind which war it referred to. The Spanish American war happened after publication and the primary war on everyone's minds was still the Civil War.
