Question:

Iron (ferrous fumarate) overdose?

I take 420mg a day (210mg twice a day). How much more would you have to take to have a fatal overdose? I heard it‘s quite easy to overdose on iron so just wondering. Also i‘m 15 if age makes a difference.

Answer:

Iron overdoses are based on the elemental iron content. Ferrous fumarate is 33% elemental iron so your 210mg tablet is only 70mg elemental iron, or 140mg per day. Signs of overdose begin with doses of 20mg/kg. So, if you weigh 50kg, you would need more than 3000mg of ferrous fumarate tablets. Your daily dose isn't even close.
