i am going to get a bench press soon. but until then is doing press ups give the same kind of effect???

u can develop a strong chest with out bench press....dips and push up will develop your pecs, but strentgh i have seen men bench 425 and can't do 15 push ups....i have seen guy do 50 push ups and can't bench 135.....you need the total package...
Push ups do strengthen your chest. I did them for about 3 months because I wasn't weight lifting and my Bp improved. I'll tell you that Bp might be more effective;however, better something then nothing. And, I really don't think we lift all our body mass when we do push ups.
No. When you do pushups (press ups), the only weight you're pushing is your body weight. With a bench and weights, you can lift much more weight than pushups would allow. Bench press will make you stronger and give you larger chest muscles than pushups alone.

Lay flat on the floor and use your hands back up and pass into opposite at the same time as no longer letting your physique touch the floor. Bench pressing is once you lay on a bench, etc and carry weights on a bar over your chest.
If you could have someone place a weight (like, a few 24 packs of beer, cans unopened, or a couple of big round 25lb weights) on your back while you do press-ups, then you would get more of a benefit. The thing with bench press is not only more weight, but also that with bench press, gravity is working against you because you're on your back pressing the weight up, away from you. With press-ups, gravity is working for you on the way down ... you see what I mean? If you want the same benefit, you have to have lots more weight on your back, and resist A LOT on the way down, just like you would with a bench press. :D Best of luck, and never do bench press without a spotter !!
