i put my turbo 400 transmission in my car and forgot to connect the kickdown cable and i was wondering if its hard to connect it to the transmission itself and if so could i just block off the hole somehow and manualy downshift or would that hurt the transmission
well it can be depending on the amount of room you have around where it hooks to the transmission. it is always ruff to hook it over the rod that runs inside the transmission. I take a pair of small clamp pliers and pull the rod out a little the clamp the on to hold the rod the cable loops over then when i have it cable over it .unclasp the pliers and let the rod go back inside the transmission. be careful not to bend or pull the rod out further than it will with only slight effort. then pus the o-ringed part in and install bolt .and hook the other end to the carburetor. be careful not to run it to close to the exhaust . or it will melt the cable and bind it it up.
you would have to manually upshift too because the kickdown cable also determines when the tranny will upshift
I would go with the 400 because it can handle more! for instance if you wanted to really show saomeone what that chevelle can really do, you dont want the tranny to drop out do ya? My father in law has a 68 chevelle with a 400 horse motor in it and hes also using a 400 tranny! It may be a tight run on outlastin the 350 but it will really handle the torque!!
If you have a Turbo 400, there is no cable. It's an electrically controlled trans. This site shows how to do a Pontiac, but the same things need to be done to your Chevy if you don't have all the factory parts. If it's a Turbo 350, it will up shift fine, it just won't down shift without the cable or you doing it manually.
