Question:

Is it ok to lay a motorcycle on its side?

I am going to transport a small 150cc bike in my chevy blazer, but ill need to put it on its side to fit it in, will this mess up the bike at all? Thanks

Answer:

It shouldn't hurt the bike itself, but you might have some problems with fluids. Drain all your fuel before doing it, and check for other leaks on a regular basis. Also, be sure to put it upright for at least an hour before trying to start it to get all the oil back into the drain-pan.
I transported a '74 Yamaha DT175 in the back of a '72 Pinto Hatchback. Nothing leaked. Didn't bother the bike at all. Couldn't close the hatch. Think about this. Motorcycles get tired and occasionally lay down to rest. (Sometimes while still moving.) This is a *normal* part of biking. Very few bikes never lay down. *Any* motorcycle that would be at all bothered by laying on it's side would gain a horrid reputation and be discontinued, or the manufacturer would go out of business.
It will not hurt the bike if you drain the fuel from the tank and drain the motoroil from the crankcase. It will take a few minutes but if not the oil and fuel will spill and flood the carb and leave you with a big mess.
This is illegal. If you get stopped by DOT or Highway Patrol you will be in trouble. Report this as soon as you can.
