Have you ever heard the saying if you are not a part of the solution, you are a part of the problem ?? There is one thing that matters, and that is protecting the innocent animals. Everything else you are concerned with is ridiculous by comparison. Your bf is aware of this and has done nothing about it? This should be a major red flag telling you there is much that is seriously lacking in his priorities and moral fiber. Why would you be worried about what these kinds of people think of you? What kind of parents condone the sister's behavior? What kind of person starves an animal to death? What kind of people keep that knowledge secret, and continue to indulge the monster (yes, monster) who is responsible for doing it? Call the SPCA as you should. If they take the dog, then maybe your bf will wake up and re-evaluate his own part in this atrocious situation. Tell your bf that he needs to grow a pair, develop some integrity, and start doing the right thing. Then run, don't walk, as far away from this whole messed up family as you can get.
First just to be sure, install a fresh battery that has a good until date on the package. I have seen batteries set for a year on a self in a maintance shop and then dud out when installed. Also, is it warning you that it (the detector) is not getting AC power and is running on the back-up battery? If you have any literature on the detectors, look for what this beeping means in the literature. If that is not the case, and this is a combination CO and smoke detector, have someone check your furnace and water heater for CO levels if they at fueled by gas of heating oil.
It would be considered stupidity as the lightning would probably just travel through the metal suit itself, not through you (like an airplane strike) and burn you nicely. You probably wouldn't die but you could enjoy life as a burned up cripple of some kind. Try a different way.
