Question:

Is it safe to drive a car with a broken axle?

The thing still runs, but the mechanic said it has a broken axle. Is it safe to be driving?

Answer:

Are you talking about a front end vehicle with an axle that is clanking while you drive and make turns? If so then you can use it at slow speeds (don't get on the highway) but the truth is you are only buying time because once the CV joint breaks you will be stuck on the road and will have to abandon your vehicle and then get it towed if there is anything left when you return to get it. Get it fixed ASAP!!
Is it even possible to drive it? I would NEVER drive a car with a broken axle. The chances of the car self-destructing and going out of control are too high. If you are still able to drive it and without anything unusual happening, then you either misunderstood the mechanic or the mechanic is wrong.
I've not heard of a car with a broken axle being able to run. Maybe he meant the part that attaches the axle to the frame. If it drives, drive it slowly to the garage and have it fixed.
