Gas is usually a safe way to generate heat, because when it is in good repair the gas is burned completely to water and CO2. However, it can go out of that state without notice or warning; that is why all gas burners should be used in vented conditions, either internally or externally. However, even if it is in tip-top condition, a gas burner will consume oxygen to oxidize the gas, and that oxygen will not be available for breathing. At some point the amount of oxygen, unless there is a way to replenish it from the great outdoors source (aka the atmosphere), will become so low that you can die of asphyxiation, even without any hint of carbon monoxide present. Beware.
