Question:

Is my Fuel filter bad? service light came on?

96 silverado 350 4x4, this morning on the way to work had the cruise set at 60, hit a hill and it downshifted a gear and started to bog down a little so I gave her some more gas and it cleared up, and happened a couple times just going down a flat stretch, the service engine soon light came on, I‘m guessing its the fuel filter, but would the fuel filter being bad cause the service engine soon light to come on? Or is it something more than that? Thanks guys

Answer:

short hair is good for some people, others, not. it depends just what u look like
Check engine light or service engine light. There is a difference. Check engine tells you something is wrong. Service engine tells you that you have a maintenance service due. Fuel filter doesn't give any warning at all.
Usualy when the fuel filter is bad the power will decrease gradually over time. And not the check engine light shouldnt come on for a fuel filter. Take in to be scanned at an autoparts store. Not always but usually it will show the problem with the check engine light as sometimes other problems will cause a sensor to throw a check engine light.
I know that you are trying to start with the cheapest stuff but, the problem is probably NOT the fuel filter (filters plugging up is just not an issue with vehicles today) Yours is probably going to need a fuel pump assembly The fuel injection system on this vehicle HAS to have 60 PSI fuel pressure or you will have all kinds of drivability issues! And to answer your question, Yes, a restricted fuel filter WILL turn on the MIL (check engine light) in this vehicle if it is driven long enough and will set system lean codes P0171 and P0174! NOTE: Take the vehicle by the auto parts store to have them retrieve the codes (write them down on paper) and then update your findings!
