Question:

Is nickel harder than copper?

Does it take more pressure to put a design into a nickel than a copper quarter? If so, why?

Answer:

Copper is 3 on the Mohs scale for hardness. Nickel is 4. The higher the number, the harder the substance is. Copper isn't too soft for general use, in fact, many coins were pure copper for a long, long time and held up pretty well in circulation.. Copper was used as the alloy for gold and silver US coins to give those softer metals extra durability. Nickel does give extra durability to US coins of today but those alloys are still mostly copper. The addition of nickel only came about when significant quantities of the metal were able to be mined cheaply beginning in the mid-1800s.
yes it is it's used in a lot of alloys to strengthen them like silver and gold and copper they are too soft for general use
