I bought a 700 hundred dollar pair of head phones with jacks that look like this
The type of connector in that picture is called a 1/4 TS(tip sleeve) connector or better known as a 1/4 mono phono jack. That can't be on a $700 pair of headphones because they would be STEREO headphones meaning there is a left and a right. A stereo headphone set would have what is known as a 1/4 TRS(tip, ring, sleeve) connector or better known as a 1/4 stereo phono jack. They look almost identical except that the stereo one has an extra conductor between the tip and sleeve. There are two black insulator rings on the stereo jack as opposed to one on a mono jack. Either way, they are the same diameter and actually ARE normal or the audio industry standard size. The smaller connectors that you find on computers and ipods are 1/8 stereo mini jacks. In order to use your headphones with such devices all you need is a 1/4 stereo to 1/8 stereo mini adaptor that you will find at any electronics store for a few dollars. Be careful when using this way because it is easy to put too much stress on the 1/8 mini that will cause it to break off inside the device. My only question is why would you spend $700 on a pair of headphones to use on an inferior audio source such as an ipod or a computer? I can understand if you were using them in a recording studio or for a CD set up with something like 24 bit DAC, 8X oversampling, 192kHz. In other words, it's not gonna sound any better with those sources than with $50 headphones.
