Is there a way to trap a lightning bolt?

Answer:

An ABC or BC unit would work, but is likely to permanently damage the device. Use a CO2 or Halon if possible. Specialty extinguishers such as Type D's are intended for fire containing the material in significant quantities, there simply isn't enough Li in the battery to cause a problem. Now if you had a few hundred batteries collected for recycling it would be different and a Type D might be required. EDIT: By damage I was refering to the ability to recover the data on the hard-drive, not saving the device. Dry chemical extinguishers, including many Type D's, use a very fine powder to smother the fire. This powder will make a mess of the hard-drive, especialy since it's under presure, making recovery difficult. - David
Co2 is carbon dioxide, which puts out most fires which do not have their own oxygen supply. and since it is a gas and not liquid it is safe for electrical. I would just be careful for liquid fuel since the force of the gas coming out can spread the liquid. IE a chip pan fire, with hot oil spraying you can be injured or spread the fire if not thinking, as in turning off the heat source. but the best in a car or home, a as long as you remember that also you need oxygen as well as the fire, so tackle and get out fast before you collapse, leave the real fires to the fire brigade. you endanger yours and their life's. If you are still not sure ask your local fire station they will help you understand
a lock smith is the place to do it. You could save a bundle by getting the insides done, not the whole mechanism. the ignition I think could be swapped factory part replacement. You might special tools, which is why we all go to a mechanic. see what a lock smith could do, first
