yh, it usaully has mecca on it and is the size of your body when you bow on the floor. usually looks like this but sometimes different designs
nope its really not necessary to have a specific prayer rug but its better to have one.
It is not necessary to have a prayer rug with you but say if your travelling you probably need one because you wont prostate on stones would you? and prayer rugs are comfortable as well. the one you have will work easily.

There are plenty hadith's mentioning the importance of a clean surface while praying. For some shi'a people I met , some of them practised praying on palm-leafs , I have been told that they honour the nature.
