My dining room is paneled and I don't want to take it down, I just want to make it lighter. I actually like the wood grain but it's just too dark. Is there a way to put a lighter stain over a dark stain? Or will I have to paint?
most lock-plates of this type of gun bear the name Towers or the inscription GR (George Rex, King George) They are usually English locks, regardless of whatever the rest of the rifle is. Those are the proof marks you should look for, other than Springfield or US, which is less likely but nice. The wood should be rather dark and well worn. These rifles were used for a very long time.It is doubtful that any of these rifles, unless lost ever saw less than 3 owners using them. It is quite possible, although it is a Rev-war-era lock, that it was used up through the Civil War, just because it is still there, and people used whatever they had. ( The concept of antiques is relatively new to the general public. Back then, stuff was just considered used). All screws should be slotted head, and grey. or worn and brown. They should not be black with mill lines on them.
Have the engine tune up and check the transmission oil level. If the oil level is normal, check the transmission if it needs overhaul.
