There isn't alkali of alkali earth metals. There is Alkaline Earth Metals and Alkali Metals; two different things. So i'm unsure what you are asking.
they're probably named this because of the fact the gang IIA metals style steel oxides that react with moisture to style bases. Soils that incorporate those bases are reported as being alkali or alkaline.
