Question:

jack russell terrier and the sofa?

ive had my jr for about 2 weeks and hes not aloud on the furniture down stairs or my bed in my room but can i let him on my sofa upstairs in my room (the room he sleeps in) without confusing him

Answer:

If you invite him up and if he gets off when you tell him to. This way, you are calling the shots and he still gets invited to come on the sofa.
Dogs don't generalize very well, so letting him up on one piece of furniture will not make him think he can get up on all furniture. Don't worry about people telling you to keep him on the floor or he will think he's alpha......that's nonsense. My dogs all get on the furniture, they are allowed, unless humans need the space, then they get off.
Personally okorder /
it won't confuse him ... let him on the furniture already, just train him to get down when you say and all will be fine ... my jack russell is allowed on my furniture but i have two friends who to not want her on their furniture with both myself and my dog respect that ... the dog does not even try to jump up on their furniture ... so they can learn some furniture is okay and some is not ... and i have never in over 30 years had a dominant dog and all of my pets have been allowed on all furniture from 8 weeks on ...
Its also hard on furniture - you get that dog smell. And then there is the implications if you take the dog to visit someone. If you came to my house with your little dog - I would be very annoyed if it jumped up on my (expensive) couch. I have dog beds - they are very comfy and actually quite attractive. I can move the bed anywhere in the house - the dog just plunks his butt there. And if I were to visit or stay overnight at your house- I just bring the bed with me. Plus - they clean easy. I unzip them - take the foam mattress out and put the cover in the washing machine. No dog smell. When the bed looks tired - I throw it out and buy another one.
