Materials: - 3 Large test tubes - Bunsen burner - Tripod - Heat proof mat - Wire gauze - Matches - Retort Stand - Filter Funnel - Filter Paper - Beaker - Crucible or evaporating basin - Distilled Water - Safety goggles - Lab Coat Method: 1. Find three large test tubes. 2. Put equal amounts of salt and sand in two of the tubes. 3. Pour these into the third tube and shake the mixture thoroughly. 4. Add distilled water to the salt and sand mixture. 5. Shake well until the salt dissolves. The sand will not dissolve. 6. Use the filter paper and the funnel to filter the mixture into the beaker. The salt solution passes through the paper. The sand remains behind on the paper. 7. Pour the salt solution into the crucible or the evaporating basin and heat with the bunsen burner. The water is evaporated. White salt crystals will be left behind. 8. You can dry the sand by carefully heating the wet filter paper. 9. You should now be left with separate piles of salt and sand.
