Question:

looking for a cold air intake for my 2004 ford explorer xlt?

if i was to buy one would i need a bigger exhaust system to let the air flow better or can i use the factory on and what are some good cold air intake brands

Answer:

i would throw a kn cold air intake on it they usaly run about 300 dollars but are worht it, it gave my truck a 15 hp gain and i just left the stock exaust on it, all i have done is installed a glasspack muffler in place of the old muffler.
really 15hp is a load of bs the most you'll get is 3 to 6 id recommend bomz piping with a kn filter same aluminum pipe for $100 less reason for intakes is for sound and better airflow thru the engine.
Keep in mind, your stock intake IS a cold air intake. All you're going to do with an aftermarket one is MARGINALLY increase the flow. At best, you're going to get 1-3 horsepower, regardless of what brand you get. People will tell you that it makes the car more powerful, but what is happening is a placebo effect. They know it has a new part, so they drive the car harder. Which makes it seem like it's performing better. It's really not. Get the exhaust too, if you want. Full headers, high flow cat, and catback, and you might get a whole total of around 10 whp. Also ignore anyone who says they got a 15-20 something gain from any of these parts. Ask them if they actually dynoed their vehicle afterward. They're just quoting what the advertisement told them.
