I suspect your employer is out of money, broke. He yelled at and fired you because of the stress on the failure of his business. Police are not interested in this issue and will not respond. This is a civil matter, not criminal. Your boss probably has the legal right to fire you, so a lawsuit will only cost you.
I agree with some of the others that there are relevant facts missing. It sounds like you have probable cause sufficient to take your former employer to court. However, one of the most relevant facts pertaining to your case is the bounced check. Why did it bounce? Chances are that your former boss is in severe financial difficulty. That would account for both the bounced check and the bad temper (not withstanding anything you may have said to potentially provoke him). My advice, retain a lawyer, but not hold out any hope of gaining compensation. He may turn out to be a turnip, and you can't squeeze blood out of a turnip.
Check your dome lights, do they go out when doors are shut? you may have a faulty switch in one of the door latches, or liftgate, or hood.
File law suit for the check, and the problem is he has no money to pay you so you don't really want that job to begin with. Time for a new job.
No one here knows why you were fired. You can sue anyone for anything. If you are asking if you had a contract and if that contract was breached, I do not know. If you are asking if you are guaranteed lifetime employment even if you do not have a contract, you are not.
