Question:

Love to dance, hate to preform?

I love music. I have since i heard music for the very first time. Once i learned how to walk i always loved dancing. My family and friends don't know i dance (by myself of course) because im very sporty. I play softball, volleyball and track. I really want to go to an actual dance studio and show people what I can do. Im interested in hip hop because i love the beat. I want to ask my mom to sign me up, but I know that my family will just bother me about it. Also, I guarantee my mom would make me dance in front of her to show that im serious. I am 100% serious but i wanna learn new skills before i preform in front of people. I also don't think she would pay for me to play 3 sports and dance. Should I get rid of some sports and do something else? Im passionate about all 4 things. What should I do?

Answer:

I don't think you really hate to perform; you're just not READY to perform. The fact that you know you want to learn new skills BEFORE you perform is proof that you're 100% serious. If your family tries to bother you about your seriousness and asks you to dance in front of them to prove it, explain that that would be like asking someone who wants to start softball to hit a home run before they've had any lessons. In sports, you don't get thrown into games and meets first and THEN start practicing. The practice must come first. If money is an issue then, yes, you may need to make some hard choices.
Try taking a summer dance class or an OPEN class which is a class for all skill levels. Most of the time, OPEN classes do not have a performance like other classes. Good luck, have fun, and no matter what, keep dancing!
