Question:

Meal moths and larvae in pantry -what to throw away?

I'm figuring we brought them home with a small bag of rice that was left opened for a whileWe opened the bag to cook and there were hundreds (probably more) of larvaeNeedless to say, we threw away the rice and all the pasta noodles, sugar, and wheat products that had been open for a while. The pantry is sealed shut for now due to all the moths in thereI thought it would be okay to keep foods that had never been openedI did see some larvae attached to the outer package, but thought it'd be safe to eat if, however there are moths fluttering inside the unopened Frosted Flakes.Would they somehow have been able to get into the box of sealed packages of oatmeal? Juiceboxes? Also, we just bought new rice- this time we moved it into a sealable, but not airtight container that was in the pantry for a few daysIs this safe?

Answer:

If it doesn't have to hold an edge very well then 440 stainless would be your best betI prefer high carbon steelBut they require alot of cleaning and oiling or they'll rust.
A Large File makes the Best material to make a knife.
All the food is safe to eatIf there are larvae on the outside, there are larvae insideThey can eat through aluminum foil The rice is :safeThe larvae are NOT poisonous or toxicThey just add protein to the food Airtight makes NO differenceThe eggs are in the rice, already, and they don't need much air to live at all.
