Metamucil as a fiber source supplement?

I know that Americans are woefully short of the desired amount of fiber in the dietI have been told by a few people at the gym that Metamucil is an acceptable fiber supplementI know that it is marketed as both a supplement and also as a laxative and the directions for use vary depending on what the intention isI would like to slowly work up to 35 grams of dietary fiber per day (per the suggestion of many nutritionists).Has anyone tried using Metamucil as a supplement? Any good/bad experiences (I know it has to be introduced gradually)My ultimate goal would be to use it (along with exercise) to complete a balanced dietI know that fiber provides a 'full' feeling and reduces the urge to eatI also know that it requires more calories for digestingJust wondering if anyone has given this a try?

Actually, I was able to get the 25g a day easily by changing my grocery shopping habitsMainly, by replacing regular bread products with high-fiber ones, and having 2-3 servings of fruits and vegetables with lunch and dinnerMetamucil actually doesn't have a lot of fiber in it (6g) - a Thomas Light English Muffin has 8g, and makes a wonderful snack with some pureed strawberries on top (2g fiber)And, it doesn't have the texture of drinking sand.
