Ok so I live in MIAverage winter temp here is probably in the twenties although it can get down to ten below (We don't turn them out when its that cold)I will be buying a horse Sunday who has already begun growing his winter coatWhat do you think of using a fleece with a rain sheet over it to blanket him? Also should I immediately blanket him with this and just use it daily all winter? Or should I leave it off and only put it on him for exceptionally cold/wet days? Lastly, for trailering, would it be better to use a rain sheet, a fleece, or both?
Both are goodCheck out the pricing.
I'm not a big fan of fleeces for blanket liners - they collect a lot of static electricity which is not pleasant for you or your horse when you remove them, and if it doesn't have smooth lining on the shoulders, it may rub all the hair off him while he moves Get a light stable or turnout blanket, and a rain sheetThose will have linings designed to not give him rubs (hopefully)Start with the sheet, and then work him up as it gets colder - just monitor his temperature with the blankets by sticking a hand under there every so often and make sure he isn't sweating or too hot or too coldSome horses run hot, and don't need much help A fleece would be great for trailering - I wouldn't go with the rain sheetBecause horses throw off a lot of water in their body heat, you want something that will breathe since he will be in an enclosed spaceAnd even if its extremely cold, at least crack the roof vent to let some of that water out, or you will have a very damp trailer and horse at the end of the day.
