Question:

What is the function of the spider in the loudspeaker?

I have a project about the electrodynamic loudspeaker, but there is a material I‘m not knowing what it‘s used for.It is the spider, I know it‘s made from cotton. and I know where it is place, but i don‘t know what‘s its role in the electrodynamic loudspeaker. Also I am just an 11th grader so go easy on me with the explanation. Thx

Answer:

The spider is just a suspension system to keep the coil in the centre of the gap in the magnet. You need the coil to be free to move in and out of the magnet gap, but not side to side. If you ever hear a speaker with a damaged spider, where the coil is rubbing and grating against the side of the magnet, you'll know how important it is!
