Hi guysI have a 1983 honda xl 185 and i am DESPERATELY trying to get it street legal, here is the list of issues/info-new battery and new signal relay-horn only beeps loudly when engine is revving ??-taillight dims when the turn signals are on (opposite to when the signals flash)-when applying either brake the turn signal (that is on) goes solid and the relay stops ticking-after messing around with it turning the flashers on etc for about 30 minutes (without motor running) the turn signals barely light up but the taillight stays on fairly strong - bad battery?-when revving all the lights are much brighterAny idea as to what is happening, i am going to check all grounds but am having trouble locating the frame grounds, any help is appreciated!

Answer:

I'd say test your Voltage Regulator/Rectifier. It sends 12v exactly to your bikes components. Sounds like your stator/alternator is working great and is sending that extra 1v to the regulator and batt to recharge. But, that 1v is also goin to your lights etc. I think a new regulator will help a lot of your bikes symptoms. Don't get a used one. Sometimes that's the reason people part out their bikes in the first place. Hope it helps.
It depends what is making that loud noise. If its just the muffler, then most likely it does not affect the engine. But if its the header, or catalytic, O2 sensors, then it could affect the engine.
It sounds like that is not any longer charging attempt cleansing the magneto with some very wonderful sandpaper, then recharge the battery.additionally make shure the battery termonals are sparkling.this could artwork.
I bought my first motorcycle in 1973, so I have been doing this awhile. I would recommend hanging out at a local motorcycle shop. Everyday people with all kinds of experience come into a shop. If you have bought your parts locally, hang there, grovel a little, or offer to do some chores in exchange for some help from the shop. Ask the riders that stop by the shop. Just because someone is riding a $15,000 motorcycle, doesn't mean they won't help you, or maybe even rode something just like you have. Other riders have helped me, more than I can remember. Youtube has videos on almost everything. Search for your make and model, or search for electrical wiring or rewiring for motorcycles. If you lived close, I'd stop by and take a look. I bet if you ask enough people, one or more will steer you in the right direction. You are learning, you will learn more. Good luck!
