i need a new back tire for my bike do i have to make the manufactors match. can i just get a new back tire and not a front one because i dont need one
Make certain that the new tyre is of the correct speed rating, do not put a crossply on the back if the front is a radial (this is unlikely unless you have an old bike), if you pick a back with an extreme profile you might have problems in handling if the front is a rounder profile.
You dont have to buy the brand that the manufacturer suggests, but keep to the size. The tire sizes have been matched to your rims. Any change in the size of the tire from the recommended can be dangerous as the profile of the tire will be altered away from the tire manufacturers specs. You dont say what bike you ride, or how you use it. If you are using approximately 2 rear tires to every front one, i am presuming you are a rider who uses his bike on the road a fair bit but rarely at the track. In which case, you may want to opt for a rear tire that has a harder compound than the front as that will wear less. It will also depend on whether you ride a lot in the rain as to your selection. Keep an eye on tire pressures as well - under inflated tires will wear faster hope this helps
rule of thumb is that a rear tire will be replaced twice for every one front replacement,,2 to 1 is a normal ratio, but try to stick very close to original sizes,,thats what the bike was designed for.
