Question:

My 01 Mercury Sables emission light came on a few days after my air conditioning died. Whats going on?

My AC went out, and a few days later my emissions light came on. It‘s making a whining chuga-chuga-chuga sound when I crank it up, that gets quieter as I drive. I tried adding freon to fix the AC problem, but it hasn‘t helped. It blows warm, but still works, btw. Could these 2 problems be related? Anyone have any idea what‘s going on with it?

Answer:

They're probably coincidental. Most AC systems fail because of leaks in seals, not because of mechanical failure, and putting in more freon won't do any good if it just leaks out. New seals are fairly cheap, and readily available at any auto parts store, but the system should have a dye in it that can be seen with an ultraviolet light to pin point the leak. It shouldn't be a big deal to fix. If the emissions light turned on, there's probably a trouble code stored on the computer, which can be read with any code reader. It's very likely to be for a bad oxygen sensor or two. Again, not a big deal to fix.
