Question:

My camcorder won't charge, incompatible charger?

Hi, my charger's been lost for what feels like centuries, and I've just found an old mobile phone charger which fits into it perfectly. The orange charging light isn't coming on, does this mean the charger is incompatible? The camera is a Sony Handycam, and the charger is from a Motorola brickphone.Thanks.

Answer:

It could also be a matter of tip polarity. Most charger plug ends are tip positive. A small symbol on the unit, or the charger may prove this, make sure they match. A correctly polarized connection will, even at lower ratings will still light the light, but will charge at a greatly increased time.
particular. you ought to purchase a separate charger on your camcorder battery to can charge it with no need to apply your digital camera or gadget. You gotta seem for a charger speciffically on your gadget's battery.
Camcorder chargers and Mobile phone charger have significant difference in their voltage and current ratings. I've two Sony camcorders and the output of both chargers are rated 8.4 V (i.e. Voltage), 1.7A or 1700mA (i.e. current). Generally mobile phone chargers have voltage ratings between 3V - 4.7 V and current ratings between 180mA - 500mA. The two chargers greatly differs, especially the current which differs by nearly 1000mA. Therefore, a mobile phone charger can not be used to charge a camcorder. So far as Sony camcorders are concerned, any charger whose DC output voltage is nearly 8V and output current nearly 1.7A can be safely used. However a jack is required to be connected with the charger and plugged into the camera observing the correct polarity i.e. positive and nagative has to be matched. Input rating of chargers hardly matters.
