I have a 1998 Honda civic ex with 76,400 miles on it. my check engine light turned on yesterday morning i plan on taking it to autozone but wanted to know if it was something i can fix myself.
Ditto what Judith said, but my Saturn Ion does that, and no codes come up when I scan, so I disconnect the car's battery for 30 seconds, which clears the memory, and drive until it comes on again, which took 8kmi last time, so it hardly ever happens, and I see no reason to fix what's not broken. Try it, you might like it, or if it really is something, it'll show right back up again.
It could mean many things and while autozone can tell you a code a lot of times its not the same as a dealership would tell you because they don't use the same type of machine. Its best to go straight to the dealership.
The check engine light could come on for a lot of different reasons. It just means the computer has some error codes on it. You need to get those codes extracted, then you'll know what the computer is complaining about. That's probably what you're taking it to Autozone for. There's probably a very simple procedure you can use to extract these codes yourself, without using any special equipment. The Haynes manual for your car would have it.
