The detectors are blocking a small area of air flow. The dust contained in this air settles where the flow stops. Would be the same with a light fixture.
How much do you value your vision?? Lye is a corrosive substance and by not wearing goggles you risk getting it in your eyes. Even when wearing glasses I still put on the goggles as they offer better eye protection. I feel it's worth the inconvenience of wearing them to keep my eye's safe. gloves and goggles are both a must wear when making soaps from scratch.
