It is difficult to diagnose a problem like this over the internet. I would suggest that you take the vehicle in for an inspection. You may even want to leave the vehicle overnight so they have the opportunity to drive it and experience the noise for themselves. Explain the problem to them in as much detail as possible. Sounds like chamois leather. Or, if it's a cheapo towel, possibly goat or pig skin.
Your pumpkin on the front axle is most likely the problem. Have you tried to wack it with a hammer to free it upgive that a try, worked on my 4x4. They tend to do this when they aren't used often.
