Question:

My parents took the lock off my door?

I will begin with, I am about to be twenty years old. I have a part time job (I work around 25 hours a week and that time is from afternoon to night), and I am attending school part time. My dad is in the air force, and they will be moving in 2 years. They said I could stay in their house while I'm attending school (we have no family in the area) and save up for a place when they move next. I pay rent each month. For some odd reason, I got home tonight to find the lock part on my door gone. I rarely lock my door to begin with, only to change and what not, so I don't see why they took that. It really irritates me that they would do this when I'm paying rent and that I'm an adult. They did this without my knowledge and I have yet to confront them about this. I also have a younger brother who is also staying here (he just graduated) and he has his lock and he does not pay rent. I would just like some extra opinions on this matter. Was this fair in any way? Do I have any say in the room I'm paying rent for?

Answer:

A small shovel and local dirt work very well unless you are stupid enough to leave a fire burning while you go elsewhere.
yes its called a bucket.
Small fire extingushers are available for prices under $20. It's not a bad idea to carry one in your vehicle all the time and pack with your camping supplies.
Local alarm is one that is in the hall ways that alerts all neighors. Central alarm will general include local but go to a call center, Direct alarm is on that will directly be routed to a 911 call center or fire station. The higher level of alarm usually a larger discount. This doesnt change the cost of your renters policy by much because the premium is low anyways but every penny does count. Good Luck.
You could carry a small fire extinguisher, but that's only realistic if you are car camping. Carrying frivolous heavy items like a fire extinguisher while backpacking would never work. Dirt and water work just fine for any fires that you may need to put out. Carefully build fire rings if you must have a fire, and follow all precautions and no-burn warnings that may be in effectbut in reality, a small camping stove if usually more convenient and effective than a fire.
