I don't have kids, but am a single woman who travels alot, and have saety concerns even for myself. I always try plan my rest stops, gas station fill ups and hotels before hand. I know its hard, but I try to do all my traveling during the dayrest stops at night scare me. Also, if I book a hotel, I like to know if it a hotel with an inside lobby, and an elevator, or a motel where the outside stairs lead right to the door. I feel so much safer in a secure, safe hotel. Also, I had a bad experience in Oklahoma City once (you said you were headed west) It may not be the nicest place to be at 3 o'clock in the morning Anyways, I know I'm paranoidbut better safe than sorry Have a good trip:)

I traveled cross country last summer with my three boysthey were older, but I packed the following and it worked out awesome for us! Pillow for each kid Portable DVD player X2 - so the older two didn't have to watch Spongebob and the younger one didn't watch Wayne's World (borrowed one, owned one) Tons of movies from the library that I took out of the cases and put in a CD case for the trip Blanket for each kid (I used a beach towel for this) Tons of snacks! (Easy snacks to open, lots of fresh fruit and water) Disposable camera for each kid to create their own memories First Aid kit (from Target) Toys for the younger one and I made sure they were new so he wasn't bored playing with old toysgot these at Dollar Tree And, most importantly, I stopped every three hours for a half hour to let them run around. Have a GREAT trip! It'll be great!
