I'm assuming this came specificallly from a reading. Anyway, here are some suggestions: 1. Wear gloves. 2. Anything you're opening should be pointed away from you. 3. Wear closed-toed shoes. 4. Wear pants. 5. Double-check labels on any chemicals/other supplies you're using. 6. Make sure flasks/measuring devices/etc are clean before you use them - you don't want any unanticipated reactions. 7. Wear goggles. 8. Ask for help when you need it. Don't guess. 9. Notify the lab instructor immediately of any spills. 10. Don't touch spilled chemicals, liquids or other materials. 11. Know where to dispose of waste properly. 12. Label everything, so that you know how to take care of it (disposal) and how it should be used in the experiment. 13. Don't make sudden moves, as you might run into someone else.
It sounds like building out the back would be the best. You could even make it into a split level house. We had one in Denver and it worked out very well. I know you have a limited budget but it might be worth your money to hire a architect or builder for just a consultation to help you with the decision.
