Im not quite sure of the reasoning behind this. Can someone fill me in?? Im sure its a common sense reason, but for some reason, It‘s flying over my head.
Generally, the visibility during rain (or snow) decreases and therefore having your lights on will help other motorists see you. That's probably the reasoning behind it. Many new cars nowdays have automatic headlights that come on during rain, snow, sunset, or whenever the sensor detects decreased visibility and outside light.
Another example of having to pass a law because of stupid drivers. It has always been a rule to turn headlights on when in conditions of rain or snow, and so long befor edusk and so long after dawn. Unfortunately a good 60% of the drivers were not doing it. Take a light colored car, no head lights and rain and you cannot see it coming at you. SO you pull out in front of it, or almost pull out. Ben there done that. Relative of a friend was killed because she didnt have her headlights on in rain and a semi pulled out in front of her. So here in Ohio, it is now an enforcable law to use your headlights when it rains. It is for the drivers protection, we gotta protect ourselves from our selves.
This law is becoming common. It isn't really a new law either, it's more a new SPECIFICATION of law. The original law in most areas was that your headlights HAVE to be on inclement weather. Well some people seem to figure a light rain where they have the headlights on isn't enough to put on their headlights. Well rather then make a specific classification to what is inclement weather they are just taking the easy way out and saying if your wipers have to be on then you have to your headlights on. It prevents the cops from having to argue about if the weather was bad enough, and allows the drivers to not think because hey my wipers are on means my headlights have to be on is simple.
