Question:

Nissan 300zx Z31?

recently purchased a 85 z31 rolling shell need help on where i can get a complete engine. The car came with a 5 speed transmission but needs clutch and flywheel. Does anyone know if i can get a different engine for it? It came with the original block and pistons but no head original turbo engine doesn‘t have turbo. Also is there any way to put a wrx turbo on it because i am not sure if the T3 turbo is reliable?any help i would appreciate. Also im in central Califonia.

Answer:

The turbo model was very different; if you want to put a turbo in it (only practical because it is a rolling shell) you will want to buy a donor vehicle with unrepairable body damage. The suspension system is entirely different, the control modules in the console are completely different, and the harnesses are completely different. Wrecking yards are a good source for the engine in any case - try checking out the source for engines around you. I would not try a foreign turbo. I would say under that condition the job is doable, but in California it may be a much bigger job than you want to get into. CARB approval can be a nightmare, and without it the car can't be licensed in California. This is not a bad project car, but as you assemble it look at everything. I had a 1984 and it had a lot of little things wrong, especially with the wiring. Fixing it up before you put an engine in the way will make it a lot easier. Especially look at the injector connectors; if the boot is damaged the connector will corrode badly if any water gets in. Dielectric grease might be a good idea for all the connectors. Oh - the low voltage connector on the ignition coil drove me crazy for months, causing the car to stall in traffic and start again in a few seconds. It did that hundreds of times before I caught it in the act. Grease that puppy.
