Question:

on a Yale KEL hoist, is the motor brake supposed to be dry or wet?

They don't say whether this is supposed to be saturated with oil or dry.It appears it is within a wet gearbox so I don't see how it could be dry, but it looks like normal brake friction material that seems it would be totally ineffective if wet.

Answer:

I took a close look at the owner's manual, and I believe that the brake disks MUST be completely dry. It says further down in the instructions that if there is an oil leak from the gearbox, the seal will have to be replaced. This leads me to believe that the brakes, while located outside the gearbox, are only protected by a case cover, and away from any source of oil.
