Depends on where you live: Most modern Fire alarms are also carbon monoxide detectors. For new build: Most areas require building contractors to put fire alarms in specific places in the home. Rental: Landlords are required to have them but the residents are responsible to make sure batteries get changed out when low. home re-sale: inspections should be done including insect and fire safety/damage.
Fire codes and such are local, not universal.
they're not required by law but everyone is strongly encouraged to hav one installed
A lot depends on you. I highly suggest you look into the 72 hour kits offered all over the Internet. Homeland security, the Red Cross, even look at other first aid kits, and select what you need. Then go to the local pharmacy and purchase what you need. Please be aware of pre-packaged kits. Some times they have a lot of junk that you will never use. Also, take a First Aid course from your local Y or where ever you can find one.
In the United States, it is a matter of local ordinance. In certain towns and townships of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, such as Lower Paxton Township in particular, each home must have a hard wired smoke alarm.
