Question:

plaster of paris with vermiculite vs. perlite?

I am doing a sculpture project with younger kids and know if you mix plaster of paris with vermiculite it will soften it and slow the drying time, making it easier to carve. I can only find perlite , which the garden store people say it the same thing gardening wise- but it is a rock whereas vermiculite is clay based. Is this different for plaster-carving wise/ Ever tried it? or Both?

Answer:

SOME old or foreign vermiculite has asbestos. If you buy a present day product, it will not. The asbestos would not hurt, but would help the incubation process. Remember, asbestos is one of the best insulting materials known.
