The condos down the street each have one on every floor. They are combination units (smoke alarm carbon monoxide) hardwired into the ceiling with no need for batteries. Every time someone burns their toast, it alerts the entire neighborhood! It's an all solar building smoking is not allowed. The smokers sit out in the parking lot puff away. I'm guessing they don't like the sound of the alarms either! New construction is required to have combined hard-wired detectors as well as a sprinkler system.
