One may heat an aqueous solution of sulfur between 100 and 160 degrees with little to no sulfur dioxide being formed, and in this way one can boil/distill off the water. Above that point, the sulfur becomes oxidized, and yes, sulfur dioxide (which has a very choking odor) is formed. It should also be noted that heating sulfuric acid above about that temperature will also produce sulfur dioxide. This is important if you ever for some reason decide to concentrate the acid by boiling out water from it. Do such things in a fume hood of sorts!
