because quartz is colorless, and many crystal can be colorless, when they are pure. when they have impurities you will see color in crystal. you will need to know the chemical composition of the quartz and the impurties as well. edit: the minerals will have to be classified by what the impurties in the quartz is, because many impurities may have the same color. I assume thats how they classifiy crystals, corresponding to what is the impurities. edit: I would like to add purity of a crystal, usually means its a certain color or colorless, like most crystal. crystals like precious gems, ruby, emeralds, are compound crystals, they can also have impurities in them which may make them valuable in the market.
