Plumbing Question - Can Solder go bad?

My husband was trying to do some minor plumbing last night. He's done plumbing around my house and lots of other houses for 30 years, so he's not a total amature. However, last night the solder would not work. It melted, but wouldn't stay on the pipe and wouldn't stay in the joints. After hours of trying the pipes just pulled apart and no solder was between the joints. He has used this same blow torch and same solder in the past many times and never had this issue. Anyone know what could be wrong here?
