we are trying to work out how we set the timer on it. it just has a dial with numbers up to 24 on it but theres not guide as to how we know when the heating will go on or off

Well I would guess the 24 settings indicate the 24 hours to a day....if you were to set it on 4 the boiler would come on every four hours.
