can any kind of aftermarket rim be powdercoated to a color of my choice?I am interested in the tenzo DC5 rim, but I don't like any of the colors. can you explain the proccess of powdercoating, and if it can be done to this wheel?thank you.
Any METAL wheel, won't have the range of colors that automotive paint does. U will have to contact p coater and see what he carries. Process (to best of my understanding): strip wheel, clean in a bath, tape off, spray pc, bake in oven
May I stand in disagreement to your plan on powder-coating a wheel of any base metal origin. Weather a wheel is aluminum, steel or magnesium it contains base metal impurities. No mater what solution, aluminum oxide, glass bead or silicon carbide blasting used will not render the surface totally clean. We have a powder-coater in the area who is a metallurgist and I posed your very same question. His answer was they would be happy to do it but would not guarantee that the power-coat job would stay on for an extended period of time.
powdercoating is applied by applying a coat of paint in the form of a powder, which sticks to the surface by way of an electric charge, the wheel is then baked. powdercoat is a tough coating and well worth investing in. bear in mind that wheels will proberly have to be sandblasted before process.of applying the paint particles. there are only certain paint colours avalible in powder coat so make sure before you buy your wheels, that the company can cater for you colour needs as its an expensive operation,
Any type of wheel can be powder coated. The wheel will first be cleaned and stripped of any coating that may be on it. Then the wheel will be coated with a dry pigment (powder) that clings to the wheel by static electricity. After coating, the wheel will be placed in a large industrial oven and baked for several hours. This causes the powder to melt and flow over the surface evenly. After the wheel cools, you will be left with a very durable coating.
