Price of heat exchanger for a furnace?
If the heat exchanger is under warranty I suggest you buy a new heat exchanger. Some of these have a warranty of 2 years to a lifetime warranty. if it is not under warranty, I suggest you gather some quotes for a new furnace even though it will still cost you more to replace the whole furnace. The supply house COST of one can vary. $0 (warranty) - $3,000. (usually around $500 for residential)
Agree with Chuck on a lot, but not all. This is kinda like replacing a head gasket on a rusty 1990 pea-green Chevy 4-door. Sure, you can do it, but my Dad would have noted Its throwing good money after bad. The heat exchanger is basically the heart of the furnace, and its failure, like cracking, can easily cause life-threatening levels of CO to accumulate in your home. Meantime, the rest of the furnace is also as old (whatever that may be, but I'll assume 15-20 years), also aging in the blower motor, gas valving, burner assembly, etc., still getting older and older even if you replace the exchanger. And the labor costs in having the furnace basically gutted dwarf the cost of the exchanger itself - assuming you can even get one to match. Just not worth it. A new, basic furnace, installed, should set you back somewhere between three to four thousand dollars (- about the cost of a basic funeral). A good HVAC firm may be willing to work with financing, as may your mortgage lender, so check it out.
You must have a pretty old furnace to need a heat exchanger. Suggest you get a new furnace. If the heat exchanger is available, your probably lookin at $200 and $3-$400 to install it. A new furnace installed, around $13-$1500
