Question:

Price of replacing a car axle?

Does anyone know how much it might cost to replace a car‘s axle? I have a ‘95 Saturn and I might need this done, but I don‘t want to be completely thrown off by the price at the shop, so could someone help me out? Thanks so much.

Answer:

Depends mostly on were you live. In Colorado we used to replace them with remanufactured axles for $199 plus tax. A lot of places charge up to $299, but it really is an easy job to do, and most shops will do it for less. Look for someone who specializes in Undercar Service, their hourly rates are a lot lower than dealers, and they typically flat rate these jobs instead of charging book labor times.
More depends on the tyre compound and how you drive than the rims themselves.
if it is a trans-axle you are replacing the transmission of the car, this should cost around 3-4000 dollars, having a shop rebuild and reinstall the tranny may cost less. if you are referring to just a cv shaft, then from 2-400 dollars, depending on the cost of the replacement part and shop rate (about 1 hr repair). i have no idea where you are located but shop costs range from 40-120 an hour on average. (the transmission job would take around 3-6 hours + rebuilt or re-manufactured tranny)
depends on the tire, how you drive, if you rotate, the roads in your area
