Do I need to replace the entire lock mechanism, or just the handle mechanism? Is my best source OEM or the junkyard?

You may be able to take it to your local firehouse to have it tested, but don't bet on it working. Either way, a new one wouldn't be a bad idea.
I can understand that they want to see each other. I'm all for that. I have met people in real life that I met online (though a game even), and they were normal. However, the man should stay at a hotel rather than sleep in the guest room. If it were just you and your husband, that's one thing. The baby in the home is another. Suggest he stays in a hotel for that night.
